Owing to an advantageous geographical position and a mild climate, Lijiang is in possession of various natural resources and agricultural products, being used as important ingredients in its snacks.

Baba(粑粑 in Mandarin)

Lijiang baba is a traditional local snack, which is made from wheat and stuffed with meat, vegetables or sugar. Thus, it contains two different flavors-salty and sweet in terms of its fillings. The main material is flour, mixed with eggs, oil and some other seasonings . After the process of dough making, some fillings will be added and later have it shaped round. Then, it will be fried, baked or steamed. It served along with it are some aromatic sauces, making babas more tasty and savoury. Baba is very popular among the locals, thus is available almost in every snack bar or eatery.

Sanchuan Ham(三川火腿 in Mandarin)Lijiang cuisine, sanchuan ham

Lijiang Sanchuan ham is named after the famous Sanchuan dam in Yongsheng county. Although it is not so famed as Xuanwei Ham of Yunnan Province, it is very palatable indeed. Because of the special cooking skills, raw materials as well as weather conditions in Lijiang, Sanchuan ham can be kept well for a long time. Besides, it can be served as an appetizer or used as a side dish fried with other vegetables. Fat but not greasy, fragrant and tasteful are its best features.

Where to eat

Most of the good restaurants in Lijiang are located in the Old Town, and many have very high standards of cooking, producing a lot of tasty local specialties.Besides, as the tourist industry develops, more and more restaurants begain serving western food, sparing no pains to meet al travelers' requirements.

Among these places, the Bridge Cafe serves good western food as well as best coffee. The Old Market Cafe is also very popular with foreign travelers due to the provision of useful travel information.

The best places for travelers to taste authentic Lijiang delicacies are Gucheng Restaurant and Qinyun Naxi Specialty Restaurant, both of which are located in the Old Town of Lijiang.
