With a high elevation and low latitude, Lijiang has a temperate plateau monsoon climate. Surrounded by mountains on three sides which block off cold currents, it enjoys a mild temperature throughout the year. The hottest month has an average temperature of 18.1-25.7 ℃/64.6-78.3 F, while the coldest of 4.2-12.1℃/ 39.6-53.8 F. In rainy days, however, it is relatively colder. So there forms a saying that goes, “with no hot summer or cold winter, whenever rain drops, winter arrives.” On the whole, Lijiang is a right choice for travelers all the year round.
With no clear-cut four seasons, Lijiang has distinct wet and dry seasons. Averagely, Lijiang has an annual pedestrian of 1000 millimeters. The wet season starts in May and ends in October, bringing over 85% of the total rainfall. Among these 6 months, July and August are the most humid ones. The dry season spans from November to the next April, with plenty of sunshine, little rain and rare snow.
Best time to visit
Considering the rains in summer and autumn, spring and winter are better seasons to visit Lijiang. If the wide variation in temperature between day and night is a problem for you, summer and autumn, instead, are more favorable.
If both the rain and the temperature diversity are not your concerns, any time is the best time to visit Lijiang.
Travel tips
--Because of the high altitude, ultraviolet radiation is strong in Lijiang all over the year. Take sun block or an umbrella with you to prevent from exposure to it.
--Clothes
Spring (Mar.-May): warm and sunny. A coat, trousers and a spare sweater.
Summer (Jun.-Aug.): it is cool in the morning and the evening, but hot during the midday hours. In Jul. and Aug. there is plenty of rain. So, T- shirt and trousers plus an umbrella.
Autumn (Sep.-Nov.): a lot of rainy days with moderate temperature. T-shirt, trousers, alternative sweater and coat plus an umbrella for outdoor activities.
Winter (Dec.-Feb.): dry and comparatively colder. Trousers and sweater, with a backup down coat.
