![]() The city has a history of some 3,000 years. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, Wuxi was famous as a rice market and a cloth dock in China, with a developed economy. Since the 20th century, Wuxi has become much famous for its industry and trade and come to be known as Lesser Shanghai. Wuxi is rich in tourist commodities including clay figurines, dark red earthen tea sets from Yixing, freshwater pearl objects, silk embroidery and porcelain cooking utensils. Wuxi has modern department stores, large supermarkets, and tourist markets such as the Nanchang temple area. Wuxi Clay Figurines Wuxi Clay Figurines is one of Chinese traditional arts with a history of over 400 years. The name "Huishan" comes from the fine grain plastic clay of the Huishan Hill used to mould the clay toys. Freshwater Pearls of the Taihu Lake Freshwater Pearls of the Taihu Lake are well known for their good natural colors and nice shapes.
