When watch the total solar eclipse, one thing we should keep in mind is to protect our eyes. Do not or even mustn’t have your naked eyes faced directly towards the sun, as a large amount of heat which is contained in the sunlight and the invisible infrared rays would hurt your eyeballs. Everyone may have the experience that when you look directly at photosphere of the sun (the bright disk of the Sun itself), even for just a few seconds, your eyes will be hurt a lot, resulting in a long dark period before the eyesight got recovered. And the worst consequence is the permanent damage to the retina of the eye, in other words, blindness.
Scared? Don’t be! TouroChina here will offer you guys some correct and good ways as a reference.
a) Use special goggles needed when welding.
The original function of the goggles is to protect eyes against the strong light. Thus it can be used when you watch the solar eclipse. And if you need, our local guide will help you get it with a small amount of money.
b) Use the exposed films.
This is the easiest way. If you do not possess exposed films, buy some new ones and expose them. Do remember to stack at least two films together!
c) Use blackened glass
Blacken a piece of glass to be fully black (use lighter or match), then you can enjoy the amazing scene with it. Quite simple, right?
d) Use water.
Prepare a basin of water with an appropriate amount of Chinese ink to be dropped in. When the water turns black, you can watch the solar eclipse by Sun's inverted image on the surface of the water. However, make sure that the water surface must be unruffled.
e) Pinhole imaging.
The appearance of the pinhole device can be made just like that of astronomical telescope with its main part to be a 2-meter long straight tube whose inside diameter is over 2 centimeters. At one end of tube, a translucent plastic membrane or ground glass should be covered as the projector screen, while the other end of tube should be sealed with the opaque cardboard. Then make a pinprick in the middle of the cardboard. That’s it! When watch, set up the hand-made equipment just like the way a telescope stands and put the pinhole towards the sun. With a little adjustment, you can get a small but clear sun image on the projector screen.
f) Shade observation
When the solar eclipse appears, the gaps of the shade will become a natural hole. Those small bright spots we usually see beneath the shade of a tree are the hole imaging of the sun. During the process of the solar eclipse, you can see the small bright spots turning from round to waned.
