ABOUT 474,000 people came to visit the World Expo yesterday under the heat, bringing the total number of visitors to the Shanghai expo more than 29 million.
The hot weather is expected to continue throughout this week with temperatures climbing above 35 degrees Celsius, according to the city's meteorological bureau.
Ruiyi Zhang, a chief of service at the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, said the duration and intensity of sun in the city this week will significantly increase under the influence of a subtropical high.
The city will experience warm, sunny day for a period to the end of the plum rain season and maximum temperatures ranging between 34 and 36 degrees.
Today is forecast to be sunny to partly cloudy with a low of 27 degrees and a maximum of 35. The forecast for tomorrow is sunny to cloudy with temperatures expected to reach 36 degrees.
Makes a temperature of 35.2 degrees was recorded downtown.
The weather service issued a yellow heat alert, the lowest of the three-tier system, at 13: 50 warning that temperatures exceed 35 degrees.
It said yellow heat alert was issued before, at 1:35 pm at the Expo site to warn visitors of the danger of heat stroke and to encourage them to stay in the shade.
Many points in the Expo site recorded more than 36 degrees around 14:00, but the visitors were well prepared.
Many were seen with umbrellas, towels and fans to beat the heat. Also took refuge in air-conditioning, such as shops, metro station on Line 13 of the Metro, restaurants and medical posts.
"It's better than I expected, probably because we have prepared well," said Jerry Wang, a graduate student in the province of Zhejiang. He escaped the heat by heading to the subway station at the Expo about 13:00.
"We followed the instructions to combat the heat of the radio and is also interested in all shaded areas on the site just in case. We are just going to hide here during the hottest period."
Wang and his friends had brought handheld electric fans and sun cream with them. They also found the mist spray cooling system and a source of amusement. Site sprinkler systems have shown a welcome attraction.
There was a marked increase in the number of visitors who choose to enter the site after 5pm yesterday to avoid the heat. About 30,000 visitors have visited the site after 5pm.
To meet the demand for tickets the night, the organizers have extended the hours of sale 20:00 to 20:50. Visitors must enter before 21:00.
Since the Expo opened, organizers have added almost 100. 000 square meters of shaded areas, along with several fans and sprinkler systems.
Huge blocks of ice are provided when the temperature reaches 35 degrees. The organizers are planning to present free fans and start selling green bean soup, a traditional dish said to help remove heat from the body.
The Pavilion of Japan has added a dozen supporters in favor of the queues of visitors.
The five medical stations at the site had received a total of 456 patients before 4pm, about the same as usual.
The Renji Hospital, treated around 30 people suffering from sunstroke, about 30% more than in previous years.
