Hongkong Islands offer easy getaways

Living in an international travel hub, Hong Kong residents are spoilt when it comes to travel choices. Budget airlines and a mind-boggling number of destinations within a few hours flight mean there is always an easy escape to a tropical paradise for the weekend.

But sometimes, it s not even necessary. Don t be fooled by the concrete jungles and narrow canyons of downtown Central and Tsim Sha Tsui. Just a short ferry ride away is paradise - and a fabulous way to enjoy some sun, sand and splendid rest and recreation.

Hong Kong boasts two long established beachside hotels that offer their own version of a holiday resort.

Situated on east Lantau Island, the 128-room Silvermine Beach Hotel managed by The Miramar Group may seem relatively dowdy compared to its funky Tsim Sha Tsui fashion plate sister property, The Mira.

Best of all, it is a short walk from Mui Wo ferry pier and a 20-minutes cab ride to Hong Kong International Airport - idyllic for anyone stopping overnight during long haul flights.

Designed by local architect Simon Kwan in 1974, the Warwick Hotel on Cheung Chau is a mini-me version of the East Tsim Sha Tsui hotels built around the same time. With only 66 rooms, Warwick is perfect for a cozy weekend retreat.

Dining options include a terrace caf overlooking Cheung Chau Tung Wan Beach, Bayview Chinese restaurant and a designated outdoor barbecue area. Warwick also has an outdoor swimming pool and access to the many water sports that make Cheung Chau a favorite local getaway. You cannot really go wrong on an island which boasts its very own pirate s cave as a star attraction.

New kid on the block, Espace Elastique is an intimate caf, gallery and bed and breakfast located in Tai O on the western tip of Lantau Island - a great fishing village from where you can see spectacular sunsets and enjoy fresh seafood.
