A three-day promotion was launched by repersentatives from Chongqing in Shanghai to promote tourism to the city in southwest China, a gateway to the Three Gorges area.
The event,, which began yesterday at Century Square on Nanjing Road E., and was organized by Chongqing government, will focus on the city's scenic beauty.
"Chongqing has invested 1 billion yuan (US$147 million) to improve the service and facilities of its scenic spots," Tan Xiwei, Chongqing's deputy mayor, said. "We believe Shanghai people will love it."
Tan said tourists can enjoy modern services in world-renowned scenic areas.
"For example, Chongqing has the most luxury river cruise ships in the world," said Tan. "Tourists who go to the Three Gorges by ship will enjoy double happiness with the scenery and the ship."

Visitors to the local event can participate in a drawing offering free tour packages and tickets to scenic areas.
Five Shanghai travel agencies signed contracts with their Chongqing counterparts yesterday. The local agencies plan to take more than 100,000 Shanghai tourists to Chongqing next year.
In addition, the Shanghai-based Spring International Travel Service Co Ltd was awarded 200,000 yuan by the Chongqing government for its long support of Chongqing tourism.
