Suzhou Entertainment

Updated: November 18 2008(GMT+08:00)
Suzhou may be "paradise on earth" but this paradise shuts down at 10pm!! To be fair, there are a few decent bars which have opened up across the city in recent years including a great little Indian Bar on Renmin Road and a couple of nice little places on Shi Quan Jie. However, if it's exciting nightlife you are after, you'd be better off making the ninety minute trip to Shanghai.
That said, Suzhou is a nice place to relax, kick back your feet and soak up some of the atmosphere in the traditional tea houses which are dotted about town. There is an especially quaint tea house in the City Art Institute on Gangzhou Lu. Check out what's going on at the Sheraton Hotel too, as they often organize parties especially on local or national holidays.
As an ancient city situated at ground zero of the Chinese economic boom, Suzhou has plenty of entertainment options both traditional and modern. Anyone interested in Chinese opera should put a Kun Opera performance on their Suzhou itinerary. Also known as "kunqu", this colorful form of traditional musical theater is much-loved by the Chinese and has had a deep influence on most forms of Chinese opera. If you're coming in July, you may be able to catch the Kunqu Opera Festival. A few of Suzhou's theaters feature regular kunqu performances: inquire at your hotel, or at the Suzhou Kaiming Theater. Lovers of Western classical music will find that there are good concert halls in Suzhou with regular appearances by top-flight Chinese and international artists.
What's more, while the developers are pulling down a lot of the old city, this usually means an influx of western style restaurants and bars. Locals already boast about the "little Singapore" in the outskirts of town which is an area where vast sums of money are being invested by Singaporean businesses. Investment usually equates with westernization so look out for some new restaurants and bars shooting up in this part of the city.
For kids, (or the young at heart) there are more options. Suzhou has (until the real thing in Hong Kong opens up), the Chinese version of Disney World! There is no Mickey mouse here but, there is a large selection of high- tech amusement games and rides. Holiday Water world is another place worth trying and there is even a lake here where you can surf in the summer!
There are many tea houses in Suzhou because drinking tea is an important custom in the area. A tea house is a great place to sip a cup of tea and rest after a day of excursions.
Sipping a cup of tea in a beautiful garden like the one at Shuang Zhao Lou, locating in the Garden of Couple's Retreat, is a favorite pastime of local scholars and one that you should partake in. It is open from 8:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the evening and you can get there on the No.701 bus. Bo Ya Tang in the Art Garden is on the water, so you can enjoy the charming scenery and watch fish frolic in the water while you drink your tea. Buses No.313, 204, 33, 301, 501 and the tourist special route No.1 will take you there. Another elegant and quiet place is Liang Lei Xuan in the Listening to Maple Garden. Fine tea sets are used and a wonderful variety of teas is available there. It is open from 8:30 in the morning until midnight. Use buses No.1, 8, 32, 38, 101, 102, 103 or the tourist bus No.4.
Suzhou is not only an old city full of thousands years of history, but also an open modernized metropolis. Entertainment here, the same as this city, is like the two-sided embroidery, having the modern charm as well as the traditional elegance. You can enjoy the extensiveness and profoundness of the traditional entertainment by taking part in all kind of fashionable and modern entertainment projects. You may join the revelry teams that celebrate the folk custom festival, go to the garden to enjoy Kunqu opera or Pintang, to listen to the storytelling in a tea shop; go to the bar for drinks, or go for a Night Garden Show in the Master of the Nets Garden.
