The Turtle Garden lies in the southeast of Jimei Academic Village and was built by Mr.Chen Jiageng, the great leader of patriotic overseas Chinese. In 1950, he went back to his hometown Jimei and settled down. He built a turtle-shaped island into a garden, which is called the Turtle Garden. It took 10 years to complete it. The Turtle Garden covers an area of about 9000 square meters. There are more than 650 pieces of extremely lifelike green stone carvings, which are carved with great care and precision of sculptors. They are a marvelous display of Hui’an style carvings.

When you enter the Turtle Garden, you’ll see the green stone engravings on both sides of the Covered Corridor. They are the works of a high order of all the stone engravings in the Turtle Garden. Looking up, you’ll see the main building of the Turtle Garden – the 28-meter-high Monument of Jimei Liberation, which shows the attachment and devotion of Mr.Chen Jiageng to his motherland, and his support towards the CPC. The tomb of Chen Jiageng is situated to the south of the Monument of Jimei Liberation. On August 20th, 1961, the grand state funeral of Mr Chen Jiageng was held here. In 1988, the State Council listed Chen Jiageng’s tomb as one of the units that protect important historical relics. |
